When you apply for an IPO on PSX e-IPO, the form asks you to pick one of three accounts. Pick CDC Participant Account if you already have a broker sub-account, because the shares land where you can sell them. Pick CDC Investor Account if you hold an account directly with CDC. Pick CDC Facilitation Account only if you have no CDC account at all, because your shares will be parked and you’ll need to open a proper account before you can do anything with them.
All three are valid. They differ in where your shares sit after allotment, how fast you can sell on listing day, and how much paperwork comes later.
A quick primer: what “CDC account” means
Shares in Pakistan don’t exist on paper anymore. They are held electronically in the Central Depository System (CDS), run by the Central Depository Company of Pakistan (CDC). A “CDC account” is simply where your shares are recorded. There are two main ways to hold one:
- A sub-account under a broker. The broker (a TREC holder, and a “participant” in CDS) opens it for you when you open a trading account. Your shares are in your name but held under the broker’s participant ID.
- A CDC Investor Account. You hold it directly with CDC through its Investor Account Services, with no broker in between.
The e-IPO form’s third choice, the Facilitation Account, is not an account you own at all. It is a temporary parking space CDC creates for each IPO.
Side-by-side comparison
| CDC Participant (broker sub-account) | CDC Investor Account | CDC Facilitation Account | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who holds it | You, under a broker’s CDS participant ID | You, directly with CDC | CDC, temporarily, per IPO |
| Do you need it before applying? | Yes | Yes | No |
| Where allotted shares go | Straight to your sub-account | Straight to your investor account | Parked in the IPO Facilitation Account |
| Can you sell on listing day? | Yes, through the same broker | Only after moving shares to a broker sub-account | No, you must first open an account and get the shares moved |
| Best for | Anyone who plans to trade | Long-term holders who want custody separate from their broker | First-timers who missed opening an account in time |
CDC account options
CDC Participant Account (your broker sub-account)
This is the right choice for most retail investors. When you select it in PES, you enter your sub-account number and choose your broker’s name from the dropdown. After allotment, the shares are credited directly to that sub-account.
The main advantage is speed. When the stock lists, you can place a sell order the same morning without any transfer. The risk is the usual broker risk: your shares are held under the broker’s participant ID. Pakistan has rules that keep client assets segregated, and CDC sends you statements so you can check your holdings, but you should still choose a broker with a decent record. PSX publishes brokerage firms’ credit ratings on its site.
One detail from recent prospectuses matters here. If your sub-account has been blocked or closed after you subscribe, your shares won’t be lost. They are parked in CDC’s IPO Facilitation Account, and you contact CDC to get them credited to your account (Sitara Petroleum prospectus, 2026). So check that your sub-account is active before you apply.
CDC Investor Account
A CDC Investor Account is held directly with CDC. Nobody else can move your shares, and you get statements from CDC itself. People who hold shares for years, or who don’t want their whole portfolio sitting with one broker, like this setup.
The drawback is selling. A CDC Investor Account is a custody account, not a trading account. To sell, you transfer the shares to a broker sub-account first. On a busy listing day, that delay can matter if you want to sell quickly. If your plan is to hold an IPO stock for the long term, it doesn’t matter much.
For overseas Pakistanis, the Roshan Equity Investment (REI) setup includes a custody account with CDC alongside the broker trading account. If that’s you, see how overseas Pakistanis subscribe to PSX IPOs.
CDC Facilitation Account
This option exists so that someone without any CDC account can still take part in an IPO. Here is how it works, based on the definition used in recent prospectuses:
- You select CDC Facilitation Account in the e-IPO form and enter only the number of shares.
- CDC maintains a separate IPO Facilitation Account for each IPO. If you get shares, they are parked there.
- CDC emails all successful applicants asking them to open a CDC Investor Account or a sub-account with a broker or commercial bank that is a CDS participant.
- Once you have that account, you contact CDC Investor Account Services, and your shares are moved from the facilitation account to your new account.
Until step 4 is done, you can’t sell, and you may miss the listing-day price movement entirely. The facilitation account is a fallback, not a plan.
Which one should you choose?
Use this decision path:
- You have a broker account? Choose CDC Participant Account. Double-check the sub-account number; a wrong number is one of the most common reasons for trouble later.
- You have a CDC Investor Account and plan to hold long term? Choose CDC Investor Account.
- You have neither, and the IPO closes in a few days? Choose CDC Facilitation Account, then open a broker account straight away so you’re ready when CDC emails you.
- You have neither, and the IPO is weeks away? Open a broker sub-account now. PSX lists brokers that support online account opening.
How to open each account
Broker sub-account
- Pick a broker. PSX lists all brokers (TREC holders) on its find a brokerage firm page and publishes those offering online account opening.
- Fill in the broker’s account opening form online or at a branch. You’ll provide your CNIC, contact details, bank account and the usual know-your-customer (KYC) information such as source of income.
- The broker opens a trading account and a CDC sub-account in your name. Ask for both numbers in writing.
- Watch for CDC’s own account notification by SMS or email, and register for CDC’s online statement access. Seeing your holdings from CDC directly lets you verify the account independently of the broker.
PSX also mentions a simplified “Sahulat Account” for new investors on its Sahulat account page. Ask your broker whether that type suits you; its eligibility and limits are set by the regulator.
CDC Investor Account
- Contact CDC Investor Account Services through CDC’s website or helpline (0800-23275, as listed in recent prospectuses).
- Submit the account opening form with your CNIC and bank details, and complete KYC.
- Once opened, use the account number in the e-IPO form under “CDC Investor Account”.
Facilitation account
You don’t open this. It’s created by CDC per IPO and only used if you pick that option and receive shares.
How long the facilitation route can take

The facilitation account adds steps after allotment: CDC’s email, your account opening, then CDC moving the shares. If you start opening an account only after you get CDC’s email, you could still be waiting while the stock trades for days or weeks. Compare that with Sitara Petroleum’s 2026 timeline: subscription closed May 12 and the shares listed on May 21. Anyone holding through a broker sub-account could trade on listing day; someone relying on the facilitation account almost certainly couldn’t.
Common mistakes with account selection
- Choosing Participant Account but picking the wrong broker from the dropdown. Some brokers have similar names. Copy the exact name from your broker’s account opening documents.
- Entering your trading account code instead of the CDC sub-account number. They are different numbers. Your broker can confirm the CDC sub-account number, and it appears on CDC statements.
- Using the facilitation account “to be safe” when you already have a sub-account. This only adds a step later.
- Letting a dormant sub-account lapse. If the account is blocked when shares are credited, they go to the facilitation account and you’ll have to follow up with CDC.
Frequently asked questions
Does the account type affect my chances of getting shares?
No. Allotment rules depend on the number of shares you apply for and the prospectus terms, not on which account you choose. See how IPO allotment works.
Can I change the account after submitting the application?
PES doesn’t offer an edit option for a submitted, paid application. If you made an error, contact PSX’s e-IPO support and the share registrar named in the prospectus as early as possible.
Is a bank-held sub-account allowed?
Yes. Commercial banks that are CDS participants can hold sub-accounts, and recent prospectuses list them alongside brokers as places to open an account for shares parked in the facilitation account.
